Least Painful Places to Get Tattooed

By NumbingTattooCream Editorial Team · Research & reviews desk

Outer arm, outer thigh, calf, forearm and upper back — the placements with enough tissue between needle and bone to sit comfortably.

The short answer

The most comfortable common placements are the ones with real muscle or fat between needle and bone and moderate nerve density: outer upper arm, outer and front thigh, calf, outer forearm, and the upper outer back. These are the standard recommendations for a first tattoo and for long sittings.

The comfortable tier

  • Outer upper arm — the classic first tattoo placement.
  • Outer and front thigh — large, well-cushioned, ideal for long sessions.
  • Calf — good muscle coverage, popular for big work.
  • Outer forearm — comfortable, with a sharper edge over the ulna.
  • Upper outer back and shoulder — tolerable away from bone and spine.

Why they are easier

Each of these areas puts several millimetres of fat and muscle between the needle and any bone, and none is unusually nerve-dense. They are also stable surfaces, so the artist can work in longer passes with fewer breaks — which shortens the session and reduces cumulative fatigue.

Do you need numbing cream here?

Often not, for anything under an hour or two. If you are getting a large piece on a thigh or calf, numbing is still worth planning — not because peak pain is high, but because hour four of any session is uncomfortable regardless of placement.

Choosing a first placement

If your design allows it, an outer forearm or outer upper arm piece is the most reliable way to learn what tattooing feels like on your body before committing to a rib or sternum project.
