Why broken skin changes the rules

The barrier that made your pre-session cream slow to absorb is gone. A product applied to open skin enters far faster and in a far less predictable amount. That is a formulation and dosing question, not a preference, and it is why during-session products carry different labelling and different concentrations.

What during-session products look like

• Lidocaine sprays or liquids labelled for use on broken skin, applied between passes.
• Formulas including a vasoconstrictor such as epinephrine, intended to reduce bleeding as well as sensation.
• Antiseptic-plus-anaesthetic pharmacy products used by many artists as a mid-session wipe.

Whose decision it is

Your artist's. They are responsible for the working surface, the bleeding, how the ink sits, and the cleanliness of the station. Ask about mid-session options when you book, not when you are 90 minutes in and struggling.

A reasonable script: 'If I start to struggle after a couple of hours, do you use anything during the session, or would you rather we book a second sitting?'

The safer alternative

Splitting a long piece into two sessions is boring advice that solves the problem completely. Two well-numbed, well-tolerated three-hour sittings will almost always produce a better tattoo than one exhausted six-hour marathon.
