Best Numbing Cream for Chest Tattoos

Chest pain varies enormously across a few centimetres. How to plan numbing for pec, collarbone and sternum-adjacent work.

The short answer

The chest is the most variable common placement: the outer pec is moderate, while the collarbone, the area over the sternum and the skin near the armpit are high-pain. Because chest pieces are usually wide and take multiple hours, plan for coverage and duration, and time the plateau to whichever bony section your artist starts on.

One placement, several pain zones

  • Outer pec and upper chest muscle: moderate, with real tissue cushioning.
  • Collarbone: bone under thin skin — sharp, and often the hardest part of a chest panel.
  • Sternum and centreline: see our sternum guide; consistently at the top of the pain charts.
  • Near the armpit: thin, mobile, nerve-dense skin, and awkward to wrap.
  • Nipple area: extremely sensitive; discuss with your artist and follow your product's guidance on where it may be used.

Planning the session order

Chest pieces are often outlined across the whole design before shading. Ask your artist whether they will start at the centreline or the outer edge — if they open on the collarbone or sternum, you want the numbing plateau exactly there.

Application notes

Chest hair needs shaving the day before; a same-day shave leaves the skin raw under an occluded product. Wrap in horizontal overlapping strips, and expect to re-tape at the armpit edge. Apply lying down if the design crosses the pec fold.
